Electronic copy of article provided by Leslie Hines

LZ BRONCO â€” MAJ Virgil W. Oglesby (Lakeland, Fla.), the Assistant Americal Division G-2, was recently awarded the Silver Star Medal for his actions while serving as Operations Officer for the 11th Brigade's 3rd Battalion, 1st Infantry during a massive enemy attack on the battalion forward firebase, LZ Cork.

At the outset of the attack, MAJ Oglesby observed that the Commanding Officer's bunker received a direct hit. Leaving his protected position, he maneuvered through a heavy volume of enemy fire to reach the Colonel's bunker.

Upon reaching the bunker, he found the Colonel seriously wounded and administered immediate first aid.

MAJ Oglesby then assumed command of the Battalion, and after insuring that all enemy forces were repelled from the perimeter, reorganized the unit's defenses and directed the medical evacuation of wounded personnel.
